Response to the Newtown, Connecticut school shooting
People around the world continue to mourn and remember the Newtown, Connecticut, school children and their brave principal and teachers. To the victims’ families, whose sorrow most of us cannot imagine, Prime Minister Harper and the people of Canada have offered what we can — our condolences, our thoughts and our prayers.
As a legislator who wishes to honour the memories of the victims, I offer this: I pledge to listen to those experts and authorities who will now try to uncover the reasons for this sad event. I pledge to try to understand the proximate causes and underlying conditions that led to this young man’s shooting of so many innocents. I pledge to use that understanding to find and support ways for government policies to respond to any similar conditions in Canada, to strengthen our society and to protect Canadians in the future.
