Preston Manning recently said that Canada needs better people running for political office.
“Redesign the participants, not just the chambers,” Manning said. “Raise the skill and inspirational capacity [of] the people that are visible — particularly candidates for elected office.”
As somebody who wants to prove the value of a scientist in parliament, I welcome Mr. Manning’s comments.
But is that the real problem? When I see people repeating party slogans, reading speeches written by others, reading cards to answer questions in Question Period, or being blindly partisan, I wonder if people are just not willing to be — or are prevented from being — themselves, not willing to use — or are prevented from using — all of the experience and talents they bring to Ottawa.
