Mr. Harper and his Conservative government’s approach to science and scientists is deeply troubling. His policy of “muzzling science” has had a significant impact for Canada and Canadian research. The government’s science partisan-designed communications policy for members of the civil service mean that scientists are prevented from speaking openly about their work, publishing their findings and working collaboratively with other experts from around the world.
We need scientists to reach conclusions independent of political interference. These federal scientists are experts in their fields and we should trust their ability to undertake their important research and share their findings as they see fit. A Liberal government will unmuzzle science and work to re-establish a respectful relationship with government scientists.
